The social fabric and political landscape of Europe and the US are constantly changing. Artists have a powerful role to play in helping to maintaining the freedoms we enjoy in our democracies, advocating shared human values like equality, justice and solidarity. Further, there is strong added-value through empowering audiences, creating more active citizens who can hold decision makers accountable. In the European Union, expressing one’s views and standing up for causes is considered a vital aspect of civic life. On both sides of the Atlantic, many artists are using their voices, their platforms and their popularity to raise questions and engage with the greater society around them. Yet, in doing so they also taking risks. When should artists speak out or be silent? What are the benefits and dangers of both approaches? How can artists get audiences to support their causes and make a long term difference?
